The southern drummer packed up his drum sticks and heaviest winter coat and
moved to Boston where he began private lessons with Gary Chaffee. The
Boston music community instantly embraced his laid-back, southern style and
he was swept up into an east-coast tour with Big Ed and the Heavyweights. He
was also nominated as one of the ten finalists in the Modern Drummer/Chad
Smith (Red Hot Chili Peppers) Drum Solo Contest.
Soon, the warmth of Atlanta began calling and Talbot moved back to pick up
where he left off. While taking private lessons from Jeff Sipe (Leftover Salmon,
Jazz is Dead), he worked as the house drummer for Triclops Recording Studio.
His next 6 years in Atlanta were packed with a combination of varied band
styles. When Talbot wasn’t playing with The Wood at festivals like the Warped
Tour or recording 2 cd’s with Miracle Vendor, he was playing blues festivals
with the Rob Thorworth Trio or performing throughout the Southeast with Big
Swig. On occasion, Talbot and Big Swig were known to play as the back-up
band for Danny and the Juniors.
Like all good musicians, he wanted to challenge himself and decided to move
to NYC to study at the Drummer's Collective in Manhattan. He has also
studied privately with Ari Hoenig, Jim Chapin, Billy Ward and Robby Ameen.
While living in New York he recorded several albums with artists such as Rob
Thorworth, Brett Conti, Brian McKnight's Diffusion Project - Volume 1 & 2 as
well as the band Marwood. To add to his varied repertoire, he also played as
part of the back-up band for the Chantels.
Currently, Mike Talbot lives in the Dallas/Ft. Worth area and is playing with
the Murgatroyds as well as teaching private lessons.

At the age of 7, Mike Talbot unwrapped the Christmas gift that would shape the rest of his life….a 3-piece “Disco Dancetrap” drumset. He grew up in Rock Hill, SC and absorbed all of the music the south had to offer.
Talbot studied with various instructors in junior high and high school and secured and held the position of first-chair snare in the award-winning Northwestern Purple Regiment for 3 years. He also performed in the jazz and chorus bands.
Soon after high school, Talbot moved to Atlanta to further his drumming career and studies. He took private lessons with Tom Knight (TLC, Dallas Austin) at the Atlanta Institute of Music as well as continued his independent studies. After only a year in Atlanta, Talbot was awarded a scholarship to the prestigious Berklee College of Music in Boston.
